Last Thursday I was fairly certain I was coming down with the flu. My symptoms had started the day before, so I knew if I wanted a prescription of Tamiflu to be effective I needed to start taking it that day (so I would still be within the 48 window). I called Southcoast Health (where I am an established patient of Dr. Michelle Wilson), and explained the situation. Dr. Wilson's nurse firmly responded that there was no way I could be fit in that day. I said that I was under the impression all that was needed to diagnose the flu was a nasal swab. Was there any way I could stop in and just see a nurse since a nasal swab should only take a few minutes? Absolutely not. Was it possible to see a different doctor? Absolutely not. I said, "Okay, since I have to be seen today, or Tamiflu will be useless, do you have a recommendation for what I should do?" She told me to go to an urgent care center, which I did (Apple Care, they are wonderful) and I got a flu test and a prescription for Tamiflu. I want to make it clear that my complaint has NOTHING to do with Dr. Wilson. She is a knowledgeable, kind, detail-oriented woman. My complaint is squarely on the fact that one of the main reasons for having a primary care physician is so that you don't have to go to emergency or urgent care facilities during normal business hours. I understand that they were busy, but that office is staffed with numerous doctors and nurses. There is no good reason that they couldn't fit me in for two minutes at some point that day when limitations on the available treatment required that I be seen within that time frame. As much as I like Dr. Wilson, I will not be going back.
